About this work

A pencil and white-highlighted sketch on tinted paper shows an artillery crew firing a cannon in an open field, with smoke and shell bursts across a wooded landscape of hills. A flag stands among the grass, and inscriptions in the lower margin and upper corners label the scene as Gettysburg, a view of the hills on the left of the position. The work is attributed to Alfred Waud and dated 1863.
