About this work

A woodblock print shows a Russian sailor in a white cap and red-and-blue uniform pressed against a wooden barricade, with his limbs splayed, while sharp Japanese bayonets advance from the left. A second figure in a tan and green uniform, with a bulky pale body, appears in the foreground. An accompanying block of Japanese calligraphy and an English inscription at the top describe the scene, and the work is attributed to Kobayashi Kiyochika and dated 1904.
