About this work

A Japanese woodblock print shows a bearded man in a red cap and patterned costume balancing on a rope, holding a sword and a pistol. The rope stretches from a rocky shore with three crossed rifles to a ship listing and sinking in the waves, and the figure bears a cross and a double-headed eagle on his tabard. The print is attributed to Kobayashi Kiyochika and dated 1904, with vertical calligraphic text in the upper left.
