About this work

A Japanese woodblock print shows a red sun rising over a purple horizon while soldiers in blue uniforms and red-trimmed caps march through snow, one of them riding a horse, with a cannon at the lower left. A column of handwritten Japanese calligraphy sits in a panel at the top, and an English inscription reads the army of the north melts away before the rising sun. The work is attributed to Kobayashi Kiyochika and dated 1904.
