About this work
This lithograph portrait shows an older bald man in a dark double-breasted coat and white cravat, seated in an ornate chair and turned slightly to the side. The sitter's expression is calm and reserved, rendered with soft crosshatched shading. The print is dated 1832 and is captioned Stephen Girard, after the original portrait painted by Bass Otis and drawn by Albert Newsam.
