A graphite sketch on a warm buff card shows a broad, spreading oak with a sinuous, multi-branched trunk and an open, billowing canopy rendered in loose, feathery strokes. A handwritten inscription beneath the tree reads "Live Oak, Monterey, April 1886," and the work is catalogued as a study by Samuel Colman, dated 1888.
