About this work

Encounter on the Country Road by Otto von Thoren shows a herd of cattle, including a spotted calf, moving along a muddy forest track toward a rider on horseback who holds a dark umbrella against the rain. Autumnal trees frame the path under a grey, overcast sky, and the misty background recedes into soft, loose brushwork.
