About this work

A hand-coloured wood engraving shows a bearded preacher in dark robes raising one hand while speaking from a stone pulpit topped by a cross. A dense, agitated crowd of men, women and children fills the foreground, many with raised arms, while armed figures with pikes stand at the right. This plate by Joseph Martin Kronheim is dated 1887 and is titled after Foxe's Book of Martyrs.
