About this work

A gouache and pencil study on a textured tan paper shows three horses harnessed in tandem to a wooden plough with spoked wheels. The horses wear teal blankets and leather harness, and the figures are rendered in warm browns, grey, and chestnut tones. This drawing by Samuel Colman is dated 1873 and forms part of his sketches from France.
