About this work
This hand-coloured print by Thomas Shotter Boys, dated 1840, shows a busy urban street lined with multi-storey shop fronts and townhouses. Pedestrians in period dress crowd the pavement while horse-drawn carriages move along the road, and workers dig in a trench in the foreground beside stacked pipes. Two hot air balloons drift in the pale sky above the rooftops.
