About this work
A painted scene shows a hunched elderly man in a dark robe seated in an ornately carved Gothic-style chair beside a white stone fireplace. A younger man in a tattered yellow tunic and red hose stands bowing toward him, while a dark mural with figures decorates the wall behind. This 1904 illustration by Howard Pyle was published in Harper's Magazine.
