About this work
A woodcut print titled Emperor Maximilian I on Horseback by Hans Burgkmair shows a fully armored rider in profile on a caparisoned horse beneath an arched Renaissance architectural frame. A shield bearing a double-headed eagle and an inscription reading IMP CAES MAXIMIL AUG appear in the scene, and the date 1518 is inscribed on the floor. The image is rendered in dense black line work on a pale ground.
