About this work

A pencil and wash study shows an opening in a cloudy sky, with soft grey cloud masses surrounding a lighter central area and hatched shading on the right. A handwritten note along the lower edge describes the middle as blue, the cloud edges as very light, and the surroundings as bluish grey. The work is Joseph Wright of Derby's drawing from 1774, catalogued as a leaf from his smaller Italian sketchbook.
