About this work
This plate from Otto van Veen's series on the war of the Romans against the Batavians shows a violent battle before a fortified town with round towers and an arched gate. Mounted soldiers and foot combatants clash with spears and swords while bodies and shields lie scattered in the foreground. The bilingual Dutch and Latin captions beneath describe the Batavian troops overcoming the Romans at Bonna.
