About this work
This engraved plate, plate 21 from Otto van Veen's series on the war of the Romans against the Batavians, shows envoys bearing a tray of gifts to Civilis while a kneeling woman pours from a pitcher. Mounted and armed men stand at the left, and a walled tower and a distant army with standards fill the background. Dual-language captions in Dutch and Latin appear along the lower margin.
