About this work
This sepia-toned print shows two lovers in period dress within an oval frame, the man in a dark cloak and wide-brimmed hat holding a staff with a cross, the woman in a pale gown with lace trim. A third figure stands at right and another is partly visible at left beside an arched colonnade. The work is attributed to William Hamilton and carries the title Romeo and Juliet at the Masquerade, referencing Act 1, Scene 5 of Shakespeare's play.
