About this work
This etching, titled The Head and the Tail of the Serpent, from the Fables of La Fontaine, is attributed to Marie Bracquemond and shows a dark, craggy grotto. A large serpent coils across the foreground while a group of nude female figures bathes in a pool at right, and small winged forms drift among the rocks.
