About this work
This engraved portrait shows a woman with curled hair, pearl earrings and a multi-strand pearl necklace, wearing a satin gown with lace trim and a dark fur stole draped over her shoulders. A heavy drape stands behind her at the right. The inscription beneath identifies the sitter as Illustris Domina Dna Maria Stuart Comitissa Portlandiae Neylandiae, and the plate credits Anthony van Dyck as painter, with the engraving attributed on the lower margin to Wenceslaus Hollar.
