About this work

A wood engraving reproduces a scene from Goethe's Götz von Berlichingen, showing an armored knight seated on a harnessed horse while a young child holding a sword stands at his side. Trees and small distant figures fill the forest background, and the signature 'Eug. Delacroix 1843' appears in the upper left. The sheet carries a caption reading 'Goetz Aided by the Gypsies' along the bottom edge.
