About this work

This candlelit scene, titled The Cardsharps and attributed to Gerard van Honthorst, shows a group of men gathered around a table where a card game is underway. A man in a blue and white outfit holds a fan of cards while a scattering of coins lies on the table, and onlookers in feathered hats and a red turban lean in from the shadows. The strong chiaroscuro lighting focuses attention on the central players and the exchange of money and cards.
