About this work

A watercolor and pencil drawing shows a crashed German fighter aircraft with black crosses on its wings, suspended and tilted by cables from a large crane on the right. Trees, a pale sky, and a rising smoke plume surround the wreck on open ground. This is Paul Nash's 1940 work titled The Messerschmidt in Windsor Great Park, held in the Tate collection.
