About this work

An engraved plate shows a soldier in a plumed hat, ruffled collar, and loose breeches, holding a long matchlock musket and turning it as he handles the match. A sword hilt and a bandolier with powder flasks are visible at his waist, and the figure stands on a shaded ground line. The print is Jacob de Gheyn II's 1607 drill instruction, number 14 in the series, dated 1607.
