About this work
This painting by Ludwig von Hofmann, dated 1895 and titled Adam Eva, shows two nude figures beside a turquoise lake beneath dark trees. The standing figure reaches up toward an apple-bearing branch while holding a red apple, and the seated figure looks toward him on the grassy bank. Loose, textured brushwork defines the foliage and water, with small figures visible in the distance.
