About this work
This black-and-white print shows a tall stepped ziggurat rising above a walled city, with terraced levels, a shrine at the summit, and a monumental gateway in the foreground. Low buildings, walls and figures fill the lower streets, while a flat plain stretches toward distant pyramid-like forms on the horizon. The print is titled The walls of Babylon and the temple of Bel and is attributed to William Simpson.
