About this work
A pen and brown wash drawing shows a bearded man and several children in a stone-walled prison cell, bound by iron chains fixed to the wall. Some figures slump on the floor beside a grate, while a tipped-over vessel spills water near the foreground. An inscription in Italian below the scene names the subject as Count Ugolino with his four sons, starved in a prison, with the artist's name and the date 1830 in the lower left corner.
