About this work
A black and white engraving titled Chauveau - Fables de La Fontaine - 03-11, attributed to François Chauveau, shows a fox with a bushy tail climbing a slender tree trunk in a snowy courtyard. A stone well and a farmhouse with a chimney sit to the left, while a dark bird perches in a bare tree at right. The fine hatching and crosshatching give the scene a dense, illustrative texture typical of book illustration.
