About this work

A soft, tonal landscape showing a cluster of dark, full-leaved trees over a grassy meadow, with light breaking through in patches across the ground. The painting appears in a printed book plate, captioned Old Apple Trees (a watercolor), owned by Mrs. J. Scott Hartley. The record links it to George Inness, and the source is a 1917 biography of the artist.
