About this work
A color plate from Coloured figures of the birds of the British Islands shows a great auk standing on a rocky outcrop above the sea, with its black head, white underparts, and heavy grooved bill. Two birds fly in the pale sky above, and a distant shoreline appears on the horizon. The print is attributed to Archibald Thorburn and dated 1885.
