About this work
A chromolithographic plate shows a common guillemot standing upright on a rocky ledge in the foreground, with its brown head and back and white breast clearly visible. Several other guillemots gather on the rocks behind it, and a line of birds flies over a grey sea under a pale sky. The plate is titled Coloured figures of the birds of the British Islands, was painted by Archibald Thorburn, and dates to 1885.
