About this work

This triptych woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika, dated 1895, shows soldiers in dark winter coats around a campfire at night while snow falls. A mounted rider with a sword stands in the center beside a flag bearing a red cross, and a kneeling figure warms himself at the fire on the right. The Japanese inscription at the upper right reads as a title about troops camping in the bitter cold.
