Two side-by-side impressions show a seated, stylized figure with a large round head, wide eyes and a frontal pose, set against a textured dark ground with a plant or tree at the upper right. The left impression is darker and the right is warmer in tone. A handwritten inscription beneath reads "Cette étrange figure. cruel énigme" with "à Stéphane Mallarmé" and the date 1895, recording the work as a presentation mount for Stéphane Mallarmé by Paul Gauguin.
