About this work
A ruined medieval-style castle with broken towers and weathered walls stands on a rocky hilltop under a pale, cloudy sky. Boulders and bare dark ground fill the foreground, with a leaning bare tree at right and a conifer at left. This landscape is titled Die Ruine Wittinghausen, painted by Adalbert Stifter in 1833.
