About this work

This hand-coloured engraving shows the Aar waterfall above Gutdannen, with white water plunging through a narrow rocky gorge framed by steep cliffs and conifers. A dog stands on the lower right bank beside a fallen tree, and an inscription beneath the view carries a dedication to George Craufurd, British commissioner at the court of Versailles. The attribution to Caspar Wolf appears on the plate.
