About this work
This hand-coloured view shows the town of Appenzell seen across green meadows, with a church tower, rows of houses and barns, and steep mountain ridges rising behind. In the foreground a family in traditional dress walks with pack horses beside a stream, while cattle graze in the fields and tall pines frame the right edge. The work is titled Vue du Bourg d'Appenzell and is attributed to Johan Jakob Biedermann, dated 1796.
