About this work

This hand-coloured print titled A View of the City of Benares shows a broad river with stone steps and ruined buildings along the near bank, shaded by large trees. Small boats move across the water while figures rest and work on the shore, and distant towers rise above the far bank under a cloudy sky. The work is credited to William Hodges and was published in London in 1788, according to the inscription.
