About this work

A painted scene shows a wounded man being supported on the deck of a warship by companions while an officer in armor raises his arm toward the battle. Soldiers in helmets and plumed hats crowd the deck, and other ships with billowing sails and smoke appear in the background, with a red, white and blue flag flying at the stern. The work is titled "Anno 1653. Maarten Harpertsz. Tromp sneuvelt" by Paul Tétar van Elven, dated 1860.
