About this work
This engraved set design shows a classical street of colonnaded palaces and a central triumphal arch receding into the distance. A cloud machine above carries a goddess within a star-shaped glow, while kneeling figures on the stage floor look toward her. The inscription below explains that the star of Venus carries the goddess to the middle of the theatre, where musicians sing a hymn to the people; the print is attributed to François Chauveau and dated 1651.
