About this work
This etched stage design shows a theatrical street of classical colonnades and arcades with a central triumphal arch. A goddess descends on a star-shaped machine within a billowing cloud, while figures kneel below in supplication. The French caption beneath describes the star of Venus used as a machine to bring the goddess to the middle of the theatre.
