About this work
An elderly fishwife in a dark jacket and black cap stands behind a wooden counter, cutting a fish beside a crab and several silvery fish, with a salmon steak displayed on the right. Behind her, a crowd of townspeople moves through an open market square toward a church tower and gabled houses. The work is attributed to Adriaen van Ostade and titled De visvrouw.
