About this work

A winged angel in flowing pink drapery plays a long golden flute while seated on a rocky outcrop above a sea of flames. Beneath the angel, numerous human faces emerge from the fire, rising and tilting upward as if drawn toward the music. Evelyn De Morgan's 1897 work, recorded here as a print, presents the scene against dark, jagged mountains under a glowing sky.
