About this work

An engraved print shows a man in an 18th-century wig and cloak seated in a wooden chair, reading an open book held on a slanted reading stand. He faces a large window that looks out onto towers and rooftops, and a patterned hanging fills the right side of the room. The Latin inscription "NON SIBI, SED PATRIAE NATUS" appears below, and the print is credited to Louis Carrogis de Carmontelle as draughtsman and Delafosse as engraver, dated 1762.
