About this work
This painting, titled Bacchus at the Wine Vat by Lucas Cranach the Elder and dated 1530, shows a reclining sleeping nude woman in the foreground, with a seated, laughing Bacchus holding pewter tankards beside her. Numerous chubby putti drink from and play around a large wooden wine vat, and a river valley with a distant town and mountains opens behind them.
