About this work

This painted two-panel composition shows an outdoor gathering beneath trees, with well-dressed men and women in 19th-century clothing. On the right panel a tall pole with a flag rises among the crowd beside a table laid with a cloth, while on the left a figure stands on a ladder and another man gestures toward him.
