About this work

This black and white wood engraving, published in the October 15, 1870 issue, shows a group of uniformed soldiers departing after surrender. In the foreground, a man in a dark jacket with braided epaulettes sheathes or holds a curved sabre while others look on, and a pile of discarded weapons and a drum lie on the ground. A church spire rises in the background above trees, with a row of bayonets visible at the right. The work is titled The War, Fall of Strasbourg, Departure of French Prisoners and is attributed to William Simpson.
