An engraved interior view of the Gothic church Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois, its tall columns and pointed arches rising above the nave. The floor is crowded with wounded and exhausted men, some supported by companions, others lying on straw, while a uniformed guard with a rifle stands at the right.
