About this work

A painted frieze of the word FLORENTIA in gilded capital letters is populated by playful nude putti climbing, tumbling and clambering over the letters against a dark green ground. Above it runs a row of painted grotesque masks within gilded niches, and the whole ceiling is richly framed in gold ornament. This work is attributed to Giorgio Vasari and dated 1561.
