About this work
Ship of the Plains is an oil painting by Samuel Colman, signed and dated 1872 at lower left. It shows a long line of canvas-covered wagons pulled by teams of horned oxen moving along a dusty dirt track across an open, flat prairie under a hazy sky. A driver in a wide-brimmed hat cracks a whip in the foreground while horseback riders and a dog accompany the convoy.
