About this work

This etching shows an imaginary view along the Appian Way, with crowded tomb monuments, sculpted busts and statues lining a paved road under tall trees. Towering, elaborately decorated structures recede into the distance, and figures walk and ride among them. The print is Giovanni Battista Piranesi's frontispiece for La antichità romane, Tomo II.
