About this work

This painting shows a violent boarding action at sea, with sailors and soldiers in red coats and dark uniforms clambering over the side of a warship amid billowing smoke and tangled rigging. A small boat crowded with fighting men fills the foreground, while a white carved figurehead rises from the ship's bow.
