About this work
A hand-coloured lithograph shows the steam frigate Missouri engulfed in flames in a harbour, with its masts and rigging silhouetted against dark smoke. Crowded rowing boats of sailors evacuate the vessel while a distant town and fortified hill frame the scene. The print is titled The Burning of the United States Steam Frigate Missouri, at Gibraltar, Aug. 26th 1843, and is credited to Edward Duncan.
